Unless my iPod is dead (specifically my iPod Classic—I still carry around that vintage gem), you will always see me with my headphones in, listening to music. What am I listening to, you might be wondering? It’s certainly a question I always think about when I’m people watching as I walk around downtown.
The better question is, what really gets me up and moving? The answer: Music with attitude, spunk and a perfect mix of confidence and cockiness. It gets me walking faster and feeling like a total boss—but, most importantly, it keeps me awake. I can almost forego my afternoon Starbucks with the right mix of music.
Here are some of my favourite feisty finds for my Moody Music playlist.
“Wow.” – Post Malone
No one can bring Post Malone down—he’s busy travelling the world, playing beer pong in various cities, releasing smash after smash, and just living his best life. With lyrics like “It’s a moment when I show up, got ‘em sayin’ wow,” and “Yeah, your grandmama probably know me,” consider this the modern-day “TiK ToK.” Also, let it be a remember to tell yourself ‘wow’ – you’re pretty awesome.
“You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” – Phantogram
What do you do when the things that once brought you happiness grow stale, and you can’t find your way back to that feeling? This song—one of the first Phantogram hits I fell in love with—is certainly funky and dark (in the words of Sarah and Josh), but impactful and infectious. When I listen to this song, I always want to make a change in my life, whether that be dropping toxic relationships or just Marie Kondo-ing my wardrobe. It’s in your face (and your ears) in all the best ways.
Bonus: Billie Eilish, the artist you’ll be introduced to below (if you haven’t already!), did a great cover of this song for BBC Radio 1. I have both versions on repeat.
“you should see me in a crown” – Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish just dropped her long-awaited debut album and this is definitely one of my fave tracks. The slow build-up adds to the power of the chorus, where Eilish sings the title of the track, a line from the British show Sherlock. Honestly, listening to this song while walking down long hallways makes me feel like a runway model and I have no shame. We all deserve to feel like that sometimes!
“Don’t Call Me Up” – Mabel
Emerging British artist Mabel is someone you should definitely be looking out for this year. Her latest single “Don’t Call Me Up” is picking up momentum internationally following the songstress’ opening slot on Harry Styles’ European tour. The track is a total bop, super sassy and I love it. I guarantee you will too!
Now, for the next time you’re walking to a meeting or class, pop in your headphones (or EarPods, if you’re feeling so ~boujee~) and turn up these uplifting tracks. You know—you do you, boo.
