MUSIC MONDAY: Alexa Ferr’s “No Good” is really good

(Originally published on angelamclean.ca)

It’s an all-too-relatable story – boys flirting with girls who give in even though they know they are just “no good”. Alexa Ferr, a 19-year-old Canadian ‘rugged pop’ singer, knows what it’s like to be in this situation, and she shares her experiences in her new single, “No Good”. Believe me – this song is REALLY good and will definitely be a staple in your most played songs list.

I spoke with Alexa to learn more about the inspiration for “No Good” and how she has grown as an artist.

“The inspiration for my new single “No Good” came from my own personal experiences,” Alexa told me. “Being a young girl, a lot of guys try to take advantage of you and end up hurting you. For me, I’ve always been focused on my career and stick to the morals I grew up with, so I’ve always said, “All these guys are no good for me.” The Invaders and I wrote this song as a reminder to young girls to just have fun, know their worth and realize they deserve better!”

Alexa released her debut EP, ‘Lipstick on the Glass’, in 2013. “My debut EP ‘Lipstick On The Glass’ was an introduction to who I am as an artist and it definitely showed a more mature version of who I am as opposed to what people were used to hearing me come out with in the past,” she said. “I wanted to release music that was influenced by the R&B/Pop music I grew up with. I also wanted to show a side of me that most people weren’t familiar with yet.”

As for how her sound has evolved over the years, Alexa said, “As an artist, let alone a regular person, I think you tend to evolve over the years and go through things in life that teach you valuable lessons. For me, that also reflects in my music.”

I chatted with Alexa about some of the artists she loves, and she named Aaliyah, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Brandy, JoJo and Justin Timberlake as her biggest sources of musical inspiration. “I’ve grown up listening to all of them and each of them inspire me in one way or another,” she said. Right now, you could find her playing Jhene Aiko and Chris Brown’s latest albums on repeat.

Alexa also shared three reasons why people HAVE to check out her music. “It’s relatable, catchy and not your typical pop music!” she said. “I’ve worked hard on making music and hope to inspire people who have been or are currently in the same situations as I was when I wrote those songs!”

Listen to “No Good” now and watch out for the song’s music video. Also, look out for Alexa’s new EP which will be released before the end of 2014.
